In most parts of the world, municipal solid waste is largely landfilled, or to a lesser extent, incinerated. However, increased attention has been given to alternative waste management options such as source separation into organic and inorganic fractions, where the organic fraction is treated through composting, or anaerobic digestion with accompanying biogas production, and a refuse derived fuel is extracted from the inorganic fraction. Other treatment technologies include pyrolysis and gasification.
ECWM processes between 700,000 to 850,000 tons of organic matter annually using open windrow system. Composting helps divert organic matter from landfills, which minimizes biogas emissions.
